Dealing with Hair Loss Leading up to your Wedding Day

Dealing with Hair Loss Leading up to your Wedding Day

Getting married can cause a rollercoaster of emotions. There’s the excitement of committing your life to someone and then, there’s also that flurry of activities that goes into the wedding prep.

Weddings are a multiple-event affair, with ceremonies stretching out over a couple of days and sometimes even weeks. All that stress could take a toll on your body. And your hair might be getting the brunt of it. So, what causes hair loss and how should we deal with it?

Stress Causes Hair Fall

Planning a wedding takes months. On top of planning for a multiple-event wedding ceremony, there’s also the uncertainty brought about by the pandemic in the last few years. It’s no wonder that stress has played a significant role in hair loss with brides. In fact, 73.5%  of Indian women are having hair fall issues. According to a leading dermatologist, some hair thinning and receding hairline is expected with age, and more millennials are seeking consultation and expressing concern about hair loss. This is a concern for many brides as brides are expected to look their best throughout the ceremonies.

Heat Styling

Along with the wedding prep stress, your hair also goes under a lot of stress with all the styling that happens when getting ready for each event. Using heat styling tools frequently dries out the hair and causes the strands to become brittle.

How to Take Care of Your Hair Before the Wedding

In the weeks leading up to your wedding, it is important to take good care of yourself and your hair to ensure you are looking your best.

Eat Well to Maintain Healthy Hair

Your hair is made of protein. Thus, your diet should consist of a good dose of protein, which comes from food sources like:

  • Fish
  • Lean meats
  • Beans
  • Low-fat dairy products
  • Legumes

Aside from proteins, focus on getting a good balance of all the essential vitamins and minerals from your food. Here are some vitamins that are beneficial for your hair:

  • Vitamin E – This is a rich antioxidant, which helps maintain a healthy scalp. You can get this vitamin from foods like broccoli, shrimp, olive oil and spinach.
  • Vitamin C – This vitamin is necessary for the production of collagen, the connective tissue in hair follicles. Collagen helps fight hair follicle damage. Food that is rich in vitamin C includes citrus fruits, strawberries and bell peppers.
  • Vitamin B Complex – These vitamins help in the proper metabolism of your food, making nutrients from your food readily available for your body to absorb. You can get a healthy dose of vitamin B complex from green leafy vegetables, avocados and nuts.

Drink Plenty of Water

Water is necessary for the body to maintain all its natural functions. Hair is no exemption. If you are dehydrated, your hair will become brittle, making it prone to breakage. Water is also needed to maintain a healthy scalp and boost hair growth.

So, just a wedding tip—drink your way to awesome-looking locks. Your hair will show its gratitude by appearing full and vibrant on your wedding day.

Exercise and Rest Well

Exercise lowers the level of cortisol in your bloodstream and triggers the production of endorphins, the feel-good hormone. Aside from reducing stress, the main culprit behind your hair loss, physical activities promote good blood circulation. When your scalp has an ample supply of blood, it will have the nutrients needed to stimulate hair growth.

At least eight hours of sleep can also reduce stress. It also gives your body the much-needed break to repair and rejuvenate itself after a hectic day of wedding planning.

Maintain the Right Hair Care Regimen

It is important to be consistent with your hair care routine. Ensure to hydrate and nourish your hair to prevent dry scalp and all problems associated with it like flaking and itchiness. Also, it’s best to trim your hair two months before the wedding. This will get rid of split ends so the hair can tolerate the rigorous styling process for your wedding ceremony.

Here are other treatments to consider to strengthen your hair for the big day:

  • hair steam
  • hair spa
  • hair oiling

Choose the Right Product

Your hair will take a lot of heat–literally–during the styling process. Use heat protectant and wide-tooth comb so that the heat won’t do much damage to your hair.

In addition, decide on the right shampoo and conditioner that suits your hair at least three months in advance. Choose a nourishing shampoo and conditioner that will promote hair growth and stick with it. Don’t use different products as this may trigger a reaction or hinder your healthy hair goals.
